Applications on Top of the DatabaseNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's applications sit on its database, so a customer who wants to leave usually has two migrations to make, not one.

The applications Oracle sells run a customer's accounts, payroll, supply chain and, since Cerner, its hospital records. Each one adds a reason not to move the database underneath. Oracle's older reporting grouped revenue by ecosystem, and the applications side, cloud services plus licence support, grew from $12,612 million in fiscal 2022 to $19,383 million in fiscal 202512.

Cerner added a step; growth since is single digits.

Part of that jump was bought. Fiscal 2023 is the year Cerner arrived, and applications revenue went from $12,612 million to $16,651 million3. The organic pace afterwards was slower: $18,172 million in fiscal 2024 and $19,383 million in fiscal 20254, growth of about 9.1% and 6.7%5.

The cloud part of it is now reported on its own. Cloud applications revenue, the subscription versions of Fusion, NetSuite, Oracle Health and the industry suites, was $15,888 million in fiscal 2026, up about 11.3%67. The revenue lines page covers that business in detail.

Enterprise applications carry switching costs of their own. A general ledger or a payroll system is tied to a company's processes, its reports and its auditors, and replacing one is a project measured in years. When the application and the database come from the same supplier, a customer who wants to leave has two projects, not one.

The split in Oracle's older ecosystem reporting shows where the applications stand relative to the rest. In fiscal 2025 applications revenue including support was $19,383 million, against $24,646 million for infrastructure, meaning database, middleware and cloud infrastructure together8. The two were closer in fiscal 2022, at $12,612 million and $17,562 million9. Applications have grown, but infrastructure has grown faster.

This facet makes the moat deeper but not wider. The figure that tests it is cloud applications growth: 10% in the first quarter of fiscal 202710. Growth below the mid single digits for a full year would say the suites are no longer winning new customers, only keeping old ones.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Applications growing about 10% a year after the Cerner step.

The subscription suites that deepen the lock-in; growth below the mid single digits would mean they only keep, not win.
