◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — the variant view

Thermo Fisher trades above the top of its decade-long multiple range while returning barely more than its cost of capital, a price for growth it mostly buys.

The market is paying the top of Thermo Fisher's decade-long range for a business earning about its cost of capital. The shares closed at $675.00 on 25 September 2026, a market value of $249.58 billion1, 36.32 times trailing earnings2. Measured on year-end market value and reported net income, the multiple ran between about 27.6 and 35.3 times from 2015 to 202534. Today's is above all of them.

Year-end P/E, calculated (times)28.7201534.2201735.2201929.0202034.0202134.2202332.5202535.8Nowstockanalysis market-cap history over Thermo Fisher reported net income; now = trailing
The highest multiple in the series.

The optimism has a basis. The shares rose 44.23% in a year5, as organic growth recovered to 5% in the second quarter6 and guidance was raised7. On the company's adjusted earnings the forward multiple is 25.698.

What that price may underweight is the cost of the growth. Return on invested capital, calculated from the filings, was 8.7% in 20259, and most of the growth now comes from purchases whose goodwill makes up 65% of assets10. Adjusted earnings, the basis of the forward multiple, exclude $1,730 million of amortization of what was bought11.

The analysts are not ahead of the price either. Twenty-nine of them rate the shares a buy, with an average target of $649.9612, below the close.

The shares are near the top of their range. They traded between $435.27 and $682.98 over the past year13, and at $675.00 they were close to the high. The enterprise value, including debt, was $288.06 billion, and the price was 4.74 times book value14. Book value is mostly acquisition goodwill, so the second multiple is a premium on top of premiums the company has already paid.

The decade's earnings growth has been real. Diluted earnings per share rose from $4.92 in 201515 to $17.74 in 202516, 3.6 times17. The multiple barely changed while earnings more than tripled, which is why the shares compounded; a higher multiple now asks earnings to keep compounding at that pace.

The reconciling figure is organic growth. If it holds near 5%, today's multiple can be earned; if it slips back to 2%, the market will have paid a growth price for a buying programme.
