Healthcare Market Channel: $1.79 BillionNarrow moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Thermo Fisher's healthcare channel sells the same convenience to hospitals, and it grew 8.6% in the second quarter of 2026 after two slow years.
The healthcare market channel is the smaller distribution business, and it reports inside Specialty Diagnostics1, next to the tests it helps sell. Its revenue was $1,712 million in 2023, $1,764 million in 2024 and $1,788 million in 20252, up 4.4% in two years3.
It picked up in 2026. Second-quarter revenue was $442 million against $407 million a year earlier4, 8.6% more5.
Hospitals value the same things a research lab does: one account, reliable delivery and the right product when it is needed. The channel also gives the diagnostics businesses a route to the hospital labs that run their tests.
The facet is modest. It is less than a quarter of the research channel's size and grew more slowly until this year.
Inside Specialty Diagnostics, $275 million of sales between the segment's own businesses was eliminated in 20256. That is consistent with the channel carrying the segment's own tests to hospitals, which is the advantage of housing a distributor next to the products. The 10-K says revenues to customers in the diagnostics and healthcare market were flat in 20257, which is the background to the channel's slow year.
The segment around it had a good quarter too. Specialty Diagnostics revenue was $1,205 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $1,134 million a year earlier8, so the channel grew a little faster than the tests it was built to carry.
The test is whether the second-quarter pace holds. Growth back near 1% for the full year 2026 would mean the quarter was timing rather than a change.
Revenue $1,712M (2023) to $1,788M (2025); +8.6% in Q2 2026.
Hospital distribution; a return to growth near 1% would mean the quarter was timing.
