⚠ COVID Vaccine Work Is Still Rolling OffLow threat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat
Thermo Fisher still cites falling COVID vaccine and therapy work in 2025, and it has never said how much of it there was.
The pandemic still weighs on the drug-development businesses. The 2025 10-K cites "reduced demand for COVID-19 vaccine and therapy related products and services"1.
The company never totalled that work. In 2021 it reported $9.23 billion of sales related to the COVID-19 response2, then from the FY2022 10-K counted testing alone3. How much vaccine and therapy business is still running off is not disclosed.
That makes the underlying growth of the services businesses hard to see.
The two 2021 figures give a rough size. Sales related to the COVID-19 response were $9.23 billion4 and sales related to testing alone $7.26 billion5, a difference of $1.97 billion6 that is the closest the filings come to the vaccine and therapy work of that year.
The drag shows in pharma services. That business had revenue of $6,806 million in 2023 and $6,685 million in 20247, a fall of 1.8%8 in the year pandemic contract work was ending, before it grew 6.8% in 2025. Contract manufacturing booked for a vaccine campaign fills plants for a while; when it ends, the plants have to be refilled one customer at a time.
Some of the capacity was bought during the pandemic. Thermo Fisher paid $830 million for a European viral vector business in 20219, two years after buying Brammer Bio. Plants bought for one kind of demand must now find another.
The drag should end. If the 2026 10-K still cites it, the pandemic contracts will have taken four years to unwind, and the recovery in clinical research will be later than it looks.
