⚠ Clinical Diagnostics Grew 1% in Two YearsLow threat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat
Thermo Fisher's largest diagnostic test line grew 1% in two years, which is what a routine test looks like once rivals can match it.
The biggest test line in Specialty Diagnostics is barely growing. Clinical diagnostics revenue was $1,104 million in 2023 and $1,115 million in 20251, 1.0% more in two years2, while the company as a whole grew 4.0%3.
It improved in the second quarter of 2026, to $290 million from $276 million4. One quarter does not reverse two flat years.
The danger is that routine tests compete on price. The 10-K lists the "relative prices of our products and services" among the factors on which it competes5, and routine diagnostics are where price counts most.
The second quarter's improvement put the line roughly in step with its neighbours. Clinical diagnostics grew 5.1%6, against 8.1% for transplant diagnostics and 6.0% for ImmunoDiagnostics. It is still the slowest of the specialised tests, but no longer standing still.
The line carries weight in the segment. At $1,115 million, clinical diagnostics was 23.8% of Specialty Diagnostics revenue in 202578. While it stands still, the segment's growth has to come from the smaller specialised tests and from the healthcare channel, which is why the segment compounded at only about 3.7% a year over the decade.
The dollars make the point starkly. From 2023 to 2025 ImmunoDiagnostics added $110 million and clinical diagnostics $11 million910, so a line four-fifths the size added ten times as much.
The line to watch is full-year 2026 clinical diagnostics revenue. Another year near $1,115 million would say the routine half of the segment has stopped contributing.
