Pharma and Biotech: About 60% of RevenueNarrow moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Drug companies are about 60% of Thermo Fisher's revenue and buy from almost every part of it, which binds them tighter and exposes the company to their funding cycles all at once.
The drug industry is Thermo Fisher's largest customer group by far. On the second-quarter 2026 call management called pharmaceutical and biotech "our biggest end market, about 60% of our revenue"1. The 10-K lists four markets, pharmaceutical and biotech, academic and government, industrial and applied, and healthcare and diagnostics2, but gives no split.
These customers buy almost every product the company makes. They buy bioproduction consumables to manufacture biologics, contract manufacturing from pharma services, trials from clinical research and instruments for their labs. Pharma services and clinical research alone were $15,057 million in 202534.
That breadth is the strength of the relationship. A drug company that uses Thermo Fisher for three steps of development has more reasons to stay than one that uses it for one.
It is also the concentration. When biotech funding tightens, trials are delayed, orders for trial material shrink and bioproduction customers run down their stocks together, as they did in 2024 when bioproduction revenue fell 9.3%5.
The 10-K describes the 2025 pattern in one line: revenues grew in the pharma and biotech market "due to increased demand from customers, partially offset by reduced demand for COVID-19 vaccine and therapy related products and services"6. The largest customer group is growing on its own spending, with the pandemic tail still subtracting.
The relationship is narrow and improving. Management said this market was "progressing in a nice direction" in the second quarter of 20267. It would weaken if pharma services and clinical research together, $4,289 million in the latest quarter89, fell year on year.
Pharma services and clinical research $4,289M in Q2 2026, from $3,749M.
The drug industry's spending with Thermo Fisher; a year-on-year fall would mean the funding cycle has turned.
