What Laboratories Buy Again Every WeekWide moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

Thermo Fisher sells mostly things laboratories use up, so the typical dollar of revenue arrives without anyone deciding to buy it again.

Thermo Fisher's deepest advantage is that most of what it sells gets used up. In 2025 consumables were $18,664 million and services $18,592 million of $44,556 million of revenue1, 83.6% together2. Instruments, the one-off purchases, were $7,301 million3.

Instruments are a sixth of the business.

The consumables are the stronger half. A lab that has written a method around a particular reagent or medium, or a hospital that has validated a test on a particular system, orders the same product again rather than repeat the validation. Consumables revenue rose from $17,587 million in 2024 to $18,664 million in 20254.

That advantage shows up in the profits. Life Sciences Solutions, which sells most of the consumables, earned a 36.3% segment margin in 2025 and Specialty Diagnostics 26.9%5, against 14.0% for the segment that holds the clinical research and distribution businesses6.

Two things limit it. The services half is mostly clinical trials and contract manufacturing, which run three to five years and then end7. And consumables can stop: bioproduction fell 9.3% in 2024 when customers ran down stocks8, and COVID testing, a consumable, fell from $7.26 billion in 2021 to $0.33 billion in 2023910.

The instrument share keeps shrinking. Instruments were $6,292 million of $24,358 million of revenue in 201811, 25.8%, and $3,305 million of $22,999 million in the first half of 202612, 14.4%13. A company whose one-off sales are falling as a share of revenue is becoming steadier, though the shift also means fewer new machines are being placed to create future consumable demand.

Consumables do not grow in a straight line. They were $17,597 million in 2023 and $17,587 million in 202414, flat through the year customers ran down their stocks, and then rose 6.1% in 202515. In the first half of 2026 they were $9,794 million16. The lock holds the customer; it does not stop the customer from using less for a while.

This facet of the moat is wide and stable. It would be falsified by a fall in consumables revenue in a year without a pandemic to blame; $18,664 million in 2025 is the level to beat.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Consumables $17,587M (2024) to $18,664M (2025); share of revenue still rising.

The repeat-purchase core; a fall in a year without a pandemic to blame would falsify it.
