Consumables and Services: 74% to 86% of RevenueWide moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
More than four dollars in five that Thermo Fisher collects are for things customers use up or services they keep paying for, a share that has risen from 74% in 2018 to 86%.
The larger part of Thermo Fisher's revenue is used up and ordered again. In 2025 consumables brought in $18,664 million and services $18,592 million, against $7,301 million from instruments1. The first two were 83.6% of revenue2. In 2018 the split was $12,576 million of consumables, $6,292 million of instruments and $5,490 million of services3, a consumable and service share of 74.2%4. In the first half of 2026 consumables were $9,794 million and services $9,899 million out of $22,999 million5, 85.6%6.
A consumable is a sale that repeats without a new decision. A laboratory that has built a method around a reagent, a column or a culture medium keeps ordering it until the method changes, and changing a method costs time a working lab rarely has. That is the switching cost behind this facet, and it belongs to the thing being consumed, not to any contract.
The share is our arithmetic, not the company's claim. The 10-K reports revenue by type and does not call any of it recurring7. It also rose partly for reasons that have nothing to do with repeat buying: services almost doubled in 2022, from $8,850 million to $16,367 million8, when the clinical research business bought in December 2021 arrived. The page on services sets that out.
The mirror image is the instrument share. Instruments were 25.8% of revenue in 2018 and 14.4% in the first half of 20269. Part of that is deliberate: the acquisitions of the past five years were almost all of consumable and service businesses. Part is weak demand for capital equipment, as the page on instruments shows. Either way, the company now depends less on selling machines than at any time in the series.
The facet is wide and holding. What would break it is a year in which the consumable share falls while instruments are not growing, which would mean customers were buying less of what they already use. The number stood at 85.6% in the first half of 2026.
Consumables and services 74.2% of revenue in 2018, 83.6% in 2025, 85.6% in H1 2026.
The repeat-purchase base; a fall while instruments are flat would mean customers are using less.
