BioProduction: A 9% Fall, Then 21% GrowthNarrow moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

BioProduction fell 9% in 2024 and grew 21% in 2025, which shows its revenue belongs to its customers' production schedules as much as to Thermo Fisher.

BioProduction shows both the strength and the weakness of a consumable business in two consecutive years. Its revenue was $2,923 million in 2023, $2,652 million in 2024 and $3,200 million in 20251: down 9.3%, then up 20.7%2. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $941 million against $745 million a year earlier3, 26.3% more4.

BioProduction revenue ($M)2,92320232,65220243,2002025Thermo Fisher Form 10-K FY2025, revenue by business
A destocking year, then a rebuild.

The swing tells you who controls this revenue. BioProduction sells into the manufacture of biologic drugs, so its sales follow its customers' production and their inventories rather than any price Thermo Fisher sets. When customers ran down stocks in 2024, revenue fell; when they rebuilt, it came back.

Not all of the rebound was organic. The 10-K says the "bioproduction business grew $548 million" in 2025, and attributes part of that to the 2025 acquisition of the filtration and separation business5, bought from Solventum on 1 September 20256. The future-bets page on filtration covers that purchase.

Within the segment this is the growth engine. Life Sciences Solutions earned a 36.3% segment margin in 20257, the highest of the four, and bioproduction was its largest source of growth.

Making the consumable takes little capital. Life Sciences Solutions, which holds bioproduction, spent $152 million on property, plant and equipment in 20258, against segment income of $3,768 million. That is the economics of a consumable franchise at its best: the product is made in existing plants and sold repeatedly, and most of the profit is free to be spent elsewhere.

The facet would weaken if bioproduction's growth fell back to single digits once the filtration business is in both years of the comparison. The second quarter's $941 million is the first reading.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Revenue $2,652M (2024) to $3,200M (2025) and $941M in Q2 2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
BioProduction revenue, latest quarter
$941M, against $745M (Q2 2026)

The biologics consumable; growth falling to single digits once filtration is in both periods would show the rebound was bought.
