⚠ The Healthcare Channel Grew 1.4% in 2025Low threat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

Thermo Fisher's hospital distribution grew 1.4% in 2025, slower than the company, which is how a distributor loses share quietly.

In 2025 the healthcare channel grew from $1,764 million to $1,788 million1, 1.4%2, while Thermo Fisher's revenue grew 3.9%3.

Revenue growth, 2025 (%)3.9%Thermo Fisher1.4%Healthcare channelThermo Fisher Form 10-K FY2025; calculated
Growing at a third of the company rate.

A distributor that grows more slowly than its customers' spending is losing share of their orders, and hospitals are cost-conscious buyers who can split their orders.

The 2026 pickup may reverse it. One quarter is not enough to say so.

The channel also loses a supplier's volume in 2026. Management said roughly a quarter of the microbiology business's revenue went through the company's channel businesses4. When that business passes to Astorg, the channel keeps those sales only if the new owner keeps using it.

The tests around it sold better than the channel did. Specialty Diagnostics, the segment that houses the healthcare channel, grew 3.6% in 20255 to $4,676 million6, so the distributor lagged the products it sits beside. When a distributor grows more slowly than the goods it carries, some of those goods are reaching customers another way.

The year before was better: the channel grew from $1,712 million to $1,764 million in 20247, 3.0%8. In the second quarter of 2026 the segment grew 6.3%9 and the channel 8.6%, so the gap has, for now, reversed.

The channel is 4.0% of company revenue1011, small enough that its slowdown barely registers in the totals, which is how a distributor can lose ground for a year without anyone noticing.

Full-year 2026 revenue above $1,850 million would put the channel back ahead of the company's organic growth. Below that, the 2025 figure was not an accident.
