Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

Thermo Fisher's $16 billion clinical research business grew 1.0% in 2025, before Clario was added.

The clinical research business barely grew in 2025. Revenue was $7,836 million in 2024 and $7,915 million in 20251, 1.0% more2.

Clinical research revenue ($M)7,69120237,83620247,9152025Thermo Fisher Form 10-K FY2025, revenue by business
Two years of little growth.

The company attributed weakness partly to "reduced demand for COVID-19 vaccine and therapy related products and services"3. That drag should fade. But a flat year in a business bought for $16 billion is a flat year all the same.

The second quarter of 2026 looks different, $2,396 million against $1,955 million4, but that includes Clario, bought in March.

The backlog Thermo Fisher bought with PPD was valued at $1,060 million as an intangible asset5, a measure of how much contracted work came with the company. The group's remaining obligations then fell from $28.30 billion to $24.61 billion by 202467, as the page on the backlog shows.

The rest of the services business carried the growth that year. Total service revenue rose from $17,845 million to $18,592 million8, 4.2%9, while clinical research added only $79 million. Pharma services, the manufacturing half of the drug-development business, grew $457 million10. The trial business Thermo Fisher paid most for was, in 2025, the slowest part of its services.

The business is large enough to set the company's pace on its own. Clinical research was 17.8% of 2025 revenue1112, so a year near 1% growth takes almost a point off what the whole company can report organically.

Organic clinical research growth is what matters from here. If the business without Clario grows less than 3% in 2026, PPD will have become a steady, slow earner rather than a growth engine.
