⚠ Biosciences Has Shrunk Two Years RunningModerate threat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat
Biosciences, Thermo Fisher's largest life-science consumable line, has shrunk two years running, a reminder that a locked-in customer can still spend less.
Not every consumable line is growing. Biosciences, the largest business inside Life Sciences Solutions, had revenue of $4,238 million in 2023, $4,192 million in 2024 and $4,169 million in 20251, 1.6% less over two years2. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $1,060 million against $1,075 million a year earlier3.
That is a consumable business going backwards while the company around it grows. The 10-K says revenues in the academic and government market declined in 20254, and research reagents are exactly what such budgets buy.
A consumable moat protects a customer; it does not create new ones. If a customer's budget shrinks, the reagent it was locked into shrinks with it.
The contrast inside the segment is sharp. In the second quarter of 2026 genetic sciences grew to $703 million from $679 million while biosciences fell to $1,060 million from $1,075 million5. Both sell consumables to laboratories, and one is growing. That points to the customers of biosciences in particular, rather than to consumables in general, as the source of the weakness.
The weight of the line makes the decline matter. Biosciences was $4,169 million of the segment's $10,374 million in 20256, 40.2%7. A shrinking business of that size has to be outgrown by the rest of the segment before any growth shows.
This danger fades if biosciences grows again in the second half of 2026. Another decline would mean the largest consumable line has stopped contributing to growth.
