Analytical InstrumentsNarrow moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Analytical Instruments sells the machines, which makes it Thermo Fisher's most cyclical segment and the one most exposed to tariffs and specialist rivals.
Analytical Instruments is the segment that sells machines, and it carries most of Thermo Fisher's instrument risk. Revenue was $7,554 million in 20251, and segment income $1,736 million, a 23.0% margin, down from 26.2% in 20242.
It has three businesses. Chromatography and mass spectrometry had revenue of $3,360 million in 2025, chemical analysis $1,237 million and electron microscopy $2,957 million3. The last came largely from FEI, bought in 2016 for $4,082 million4.
The history is steady growth with one interruption. Revenue was $3,208 million in 20155, $4,821 million in 2017 with FEI6, and $5,522 million in 20197. In 2020 it fell to $5,124 million8 as laboratories closed, and the margin fell to 15.8%9. It then recovered to $7,463 million in 202410.
It is paid mostly per instrument, with service contracts and some consumables attached. That makes it the most cyclical segment: customers delay capital purchases when budgets are uncertain.
Profitability peaked in 2023 at 26.3%11. In 2025 the 10-K attributed the fall to "the impacts of tariffs and related foreign exchange, strategic investments, and unfavorable business mix"12. In the second quarter of 2026 the margin was 23.0% against 18.8% a year earlier13.
Growth has slowed. Revenue rose 2.8% in 2024 and 1.2% in 202514, with chemical analysis down $78 million15 and electron microscopy up from $2,870 million to $2,957 million16. The second quarter of 2026 was better: revenue of $1,847 million against $1,728 million17, and 7% organic growth18.
The outlook depends on capital budgets and on the proteomics software the company bought in 2026, which reports here. Rivals are the instrument specialists described on the competitors page.
The quarter's detail shows where growth came from. In the second quarter of 2026 chromatography and mass spectrometry revenue was $821 million against $784 million, chemical analysis $318 million against $292 million and electron microscopy $707 million against $652 million19. Segment income was $424 million against $325 million20. The segment spent $124 million on capital equipment in 202521, a small figure for a company that makes the machines others buy.
FEI was paid for in cash, $4,440 million22, and electron microscopy has been the segment's fastest-growing business over the past two years. MarketsandMarkets expects the instrumentation market to grow from USD 63.4 billion in 2025 to USD 92.53 billion by 203123, about 6.5% a year24; a third-party estimate, but faster than the segment's recent growth.
Pricing power is the question. A margin back below 20% in a year without a tariff shock would say the segment had lost pricing power to the specialists.
Margin 26.2% (2024) to 23.0% (2025); 23.0% in Q2 2026 from 18.8%.
Instrument demand; growth falling back toward 1% would mean capital budgets have tightened again.
