$29.7 Billion Owed, by Customers Nobody NamesNarrow moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Thermo Fisher's $29.7 billion backlog is mostly trials and manufacturing contracts with large drug companies, and it discloses nothing about who owes it.
Thermo Fisher's backlog is large and anonymous. Remaining performance obligations were $27.92 billion at the end of 2025, approximately 52% expected within twelve months1, and $29.70 billion at 27 June 20262. The amounts beyond a year "generally relate to contract manufacturing, clinical research and extended warranty service agreements", typically lasting three to five years3.
The backlog is concentrated by business, even if not by customer. In 2019, the last year the company broke backlog down by segment, Laboratory Products and Services held $4,577 million of $7,768 million4, 59%5. The PPD and Clario purchases have added more trial contracts since.
Trial and manufacturing contracts are signed with fewer, larger customers than reagent orders. A backlog built from them is likely more concentrated than revenue, but the company gives no figure.
The backlog is about 64% of a year's revenue6, enough to make a slowdown visible early if it shrinks.
The backlog grew fastest in the pandemic. It was $7.77 billion at the end of 20197 and $12.81 billion at the end of 20208, before PPD took it to $28.30 billion in 20219. The growth since has come from acquisitions: Clario's backlog alone was valued at $423 million10.
The backlog added $1.78 billion in the first half of 20261112, most of it with Clario. None of the filings says which customers it came with.
The relationship is narrow. It would weaken if the share due within twelve months, 52%, fell while the total rose, which would mean the backlog was lengthening rather than refilling.
RPO $24.61bn (2024) to $29.70bn (June 2026); 52% within a year.
How quickly the backlog turns into revenue; a falling share while the total rises would mean it is lengthening, not refilling.
