Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

Thermo Fisher's contracted backlog fell 13% in three years as pandemic work ended, and it recovered only once Clario was added.

Remaining performance obligations, the contracted revenue still to be delivered, peaked at $28.30 billion at the end of 20211. They were $26.97 billion in 20222, $26.92 billion in 20233 and $24.61 billion in 20244, 13.0% below the peak5.

Down to 2024, up with Clario.

The decline was pandemic work running off, and it has reversed: $27.92 billion at the end of 20256 and $29.70 billion in June 20267, with Clario added.

A backlog that can fall 13% in three years is less of a moat than the word suggests. It has to be refilled constantly.

The backlog has also lengthened. At the end of 2020, 74% of remaining obligations were expected within twelve months8; at the end of 2021, 59%9; since 2023 about 53% and then 52%1011. Longer contracts are steadier, but a backlog that takes longer to turn into revenue says less about the next year.

Before the pandemic the backlog was growing on its own. It rose from $5,087 million at the end of 2018 to $7,768 million at the end of 201912, 52.7%13, and in the laboratory products and services segment from $2,042 million to $4,577 million14, the year Brammer Bio was bought. The order book has always depended on purchases as well as on customers.

The fall was gradual rather than sudden: $26.97 billion at the end of 202215 and $26.92 billion a year later16, before the larger drop in 2024.

What matters now is the backlog excluding acquisitions. If it falls again while acquisitions are added, the organic order book is shrinking.
