Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Life Sciences Solutions earns 36% on what laboratories use up, the best business Thermo Fisher owns, and it grows about 3% a year on its own.
Life Sciences Solutions is Thermo Fisher's most profitable segment. Its revenue was $10,374 million in 2025, of which $8,781 million came from outside customers and $1,593 million from the company's own segments1. It earned $3,768 million of segment income, a 36.3% margin2, and 37.3% of all segment income on less than a quarter of segment revenue3.
Inside it are four businesses. Biosciences had revenue of $4,169 million in 2025, genetic sciences $2,870 million, bioproduction $3,200 million and a new other line $136 million4. They sell mostly consumables: reagents, assays, cell-culture products and, since the Solventum purchase, filtration.
The history is two stories. From 2015 to 2019 the segment grew steadily, from $4,774 million5 to $6,856 million6, as margins rose from 29.6% to 35.7%7. Then the pandemic made it a testing business: revenue reached $12,168 million in 2020 and $15,631 million in 2021, when segment income was $7,817 million at 50.0%89. By 2023 revenue was back to $9,977 million and segment income $3,420 million10.
It is paid by the order. A laboratory or a drug manufacturer buys reagents and media as it uses them; there is no subscription, only the habit of a validated method.
Profitability has settled a little above its pre-pandemic level. The margin was 34.3% in 2023, 36.4% in 2024 and 36.3% in 20251112, and 37.0% in the second quarter of 202613.
Growth is modest without acquisitions. Revenue grew 7.7% in 202514, helped by Olink and the filtration purchase, and 12.6% in the second quarter of 202615, of which management put 3% as organic16. Over ten years the segment compounded at about 8.1% a year17, including Affymetrix for $1,342 million in 201618, PeproTech for $1,864 million in 202119, Olink and filtration.
The outlook rests on bioproduction and the drug industry's manufacturing volumes, as the page on bioproduction describes.
The segment needs little capital to produce its profit. It spent $152 million on property, plant and equipment in 202520 against segment income of $3,768 million, and its own segment assets were $3,446 million21, because the goodwill from its acquisitions is held centrally. In the second quarter of 2026 its segment income was $1,041 million against $919 million a year earlier22, with bioproduction at $941 million and genetic sciences at $703 million23.
The segment has been built by purchase as much as by growth. Affymetrix cost $1,342 million in 201624, PeproTech $1,864 million in 202125, Olink $3,146 million in 2024 and the filtration business $3,870 million in 202526, about $10.2 billion in all27. Over the same ten years segment revenue rose by $5,600 million28.
The verdict would change if the segment margin fell below 34%, where it stood in 2023, while revenue grew: that would say price, not the lock-in, was carrying the volume.
Segment margin 34.3% (2023) to 36.3% (2025) and 37.0% in Q2 2026.
The consumable franchise's pricing; a fall below 34% with rising revenue would mean price is doing the work.
