Laboratory Products and Biopharma ServicesNarrow moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

More than half of Thermo Fisher's revenue earns a 14% margin in distribution, contract manufacturing and trials, businesses that were mostly bought.

Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services is more than half of Thermo Fisher and the least profitable part of it. Revenue was $23,984 million in 20251, 53.5% of external revenue2, and segment income $3,350 million, a 14.0% margin3.

Patheon in 2017, PPD in 2021.

It combines four businesses that share little except customers. Laboratory products had revenue of $2,407 million in 2025, the research and safety market channel $7,440 million, pharma services $7,142 million and clinical research $7,915 million, less $920 million of sales between them4.

The history is acquisition. The segment, then Laboratory Products and Services, had revenue of $6,372 million in 20155. Patheon added contract manufacturing in 2017 and revenue reached $10,035 million in 20186. PPD, bought in December 2021, took it from $14,862 million in 2021 to $22,511 million in 20227, and the segment was renamed. Clario joined in March 2026.

It is paid three ways: by the order for distribution, by the contract for manufacturing, and by the trial for clinical research. The contracts typically run three to five years8.

Profitability is thin but improving. The margin was 14.5% in 2015, fell to 10.4% in 2020 and 12.4% in 20219, and has been between 12.8% and 14.6% since10. It was 14.0% in the second quarter of 202611. The segment also takes most of the capital: $1,005 million of $1,525 million in 202512.

Growth is mostly bought. Revenue compounded at about 14.2% a year from 2015 to 202513, the fastest of the four segments, but grew only 3.6% in 202514, with pharma services and the research channel adding $457 million and $422 million15. In the second quarter of 2026 it grew 11.6%16 to $6,693 million17, with Clario, and 5% organically18.

The outlook depends on Clario lifting the margin: a data business should earn more than trials and distribution.

Some of the segment is shared with partners. Thermo Fisher owns 60% of PPD-SNBL K.K., a Japanese subsidiary19, whose minority partner holds put options. Inside the segment, $920 million of sales between its own businesses was eliminated in 202520. Its segment assets were $6,485 million21, the most of the four, because contract manufacturing needs plants; its external revenue was $23,818 million22.

Profit grew faster than revenue in the latest quarter. Segment income was $936 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $825 million a year earlier23, 13.5% more24, and the margin edged up to 14.0% from 13.8%. Clario's first full quarter is inside that figure.

The verdict would change if the segment margin stayed at or below 14% once Clario is in both years, which would say the largest acquisition since PPD did not improve the segment's economics.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Margin 13.3% (2024) to 14.0% (2025); Clario added in 2026.

The low-margin half; a margin still at or below 14% once Clario is in both years would mean it did not improve the economics.
