✦ Proteomics: Olink and Two Software CompaniesThin moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — the future bets

Thermo Fisher has bought Olink and two software companies to be inside protein measurement if it becomes routine, and the growth so far is the acquisition.

Thermo Fisher is buying its way into proteomics, the measurement of proteins. It bought Olink on 10 July 2024 for $3,146 million, of which $2,301 million was goodwill1. In 2026 it bought "two proteomics software companies including one in the U.S. and one in Germany"2, for undisclosed prices.

Olink added $82 million in 2025.

Olink sits in genetic sciences. That business had revenue of $2,787 million in 2024 and $2,870 million in 20253, and the 10-K says genetic sciences "grew $82 million, driven by the 2024 acquisition of Olink"4. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $703 million against $679 million a year earlier5.

The bet is that protein measurement becomes a routine consumable, as gene sequencing did, and that Thermo Fisher's mass spectrometers and Olink's assays are both inside the workflow when it does.

So far the numbers are small. Genetic sciences grew 3.0% in 20256, and the whole of that increase is attributed to a business that was bought.

Most of the Olink price was goodwill. Of $3,146 million, $2,301 million, about 73%, was recorded as goodwill78. That is the premium paid for a growth rate the company expects rather than for assets it can see.

The cash side of the deal was slightly larger than the booked price. Thermo Fisher paid $3,215 million in cash, with $28 million still payable, and acquired $97 million of Olink's cash9, leaving the $3,146 million net. It was bought through a tender offer and so came with its full cost up front.

The bet is thin until it shows organic growth. Genetic sciences growth above 5% in 2026, with Olink in both years, would say proteomics has started to compound.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Genetic sciences $2,787M (2024) to $2,870M (2025).

Where Olink sits; growth above 5% with Olink in both years would show proteomics compounding.
