The Revenue LinesNarrow moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

Thermo Fisher's four segments earn between 14% and 36%, and the 14% segment is more than half the company.

Thermo Fisher reports four segments. In 2025 Life Sciences Solutions had revenue of $10,374 million, Analytical Instruments $7,554 million, Specialty Diagnostics $4,676 million and Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services $23,984 million1. Because the segments sell to one another, their total exceeds consolidated revenue; an eliminations line of $2,033 million reconciles them to $44,556 million2.

The biggest segment earns the least.

The chart in this app shows the four segments' revenue as reported for 2015 to 2025. The bands sum to more than revenue in every year, by the eliminations: $633 million in 20153, $2,662 million in 20204 and $2,033 million in 20255. In 2021 the fourth segment was renamed from Laboratory Products and Services when PPD was added.

The segments earn very differently. Segment income in 2025 was $3,768 million in Life Sciences Solutions, $1,736 million in Analytical Instruments, $1,256 million in Specialty Diagnostics and $3,350 million in Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services6. The largest segment earns a 14.0% margin; the second earns 36.3%.

Growth has come from different places in each decade. Before the pandemic Life Sciences Solutions and Analytical Instruments led. Since 2021 the fourth segment has grown by acquisition while the pandemic segments shrank.

Measured on sales to outside customers, the picture is the same with the double counting removed. In 2025 Life Sciences Solutions sold $8,781 million to external customers, Analytical Instruments $7,353 million, Specialty Diagnostics $4,604 million and Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services $23,818 million7, exactly $44,556 million in total. On that basis the lowest-margin segment is 53.5% of the company8, and Life Sciences Solutions, the most profitable, is under a fifth.

Total segment income has not regained its pandemic peak. It was $9,556 million in 2020 and $12,138 million in 20219, $9,810 million in 202310 and $10,109 million in 202511. The four lines together earn about what they earned in 2020, on revenue that is $12,338 million larger12.

The lines describe one company that sells consumables at high margins and services at low ones. The figure to follow is the combined segment margin, 21.7% in 202513; if Clario and filtration lift it, the mix is improving, and if it falls, the purchases are diluting the business.

The mix of high- and low-margin businesses; a fall as acquisitions arrive would mean they dilute the business.

How it's calculated: Total segment income ($10,109M) divided by the sum of the four segments' revenue before eliminations ($46,589M) in 2025, from the FY2025 10-K segment note.
