◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — the variant view
Cisco's multiple doubled while it became more of a hardware company, and about a third of next year's guided growth is price increases.
📈 CSCO valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market has paid Cisco a software company's multiple for a hardware company's year. The price-to-earnings ratio was 16.83 at the end of fiscal 2023 and 33.92 at the end of fiscal 20261. Over those three years Cisco became more of a hardware company, not less.
The mix shows it. Subscription revenue fell from 55.6% of revenue in fiscal 2025 to 50.5% in fiscal 20262. Networking, mostly hardware, supplied about 95% of the year's revenue increase: networking rose $6,364 million, security $138 million, collaboration $146 million and observability $40 million, while services fell $16 million3. Software revenue grew 4%4.
Part of the growth is price. The finance chief said price increases added about 5 points to fourth-quarter growth and expects 4 to 5 points in fiscal 20275, about a third of the guided 15%6. Price increases passed on from memory costs are real revenue, but they do not recur if memory prices fall.
What the market may be right about is the enterprise refresh. Orders excluding hyperscalers grew 25% in the fourth quarter7, which suggests the installed base is buying again.
The adjusted figures tell a steadier story than the GAAP ones. Non-GAAP earnings per share rose from $3.81 in fiscal 2025 to $4.33 in fiscal 20268, about 13.6%9, while GAAP earnings rose from $2.55 to $3.3310, partly because fiscal 2025 carried the supplier settlement and a lower tax rate: 8.3% against 17.1% in fiscal 202611. The forward multiple of about 21 is on the adjusted basis12.
The bull case is not unreasonable. Consensus expects fiscal 2028 revenue of $78.00 billion and earnings of $5.62 a share13, which at today's price would be about 19 times earnings14. If the enterprise refresh and the AI build-out both continue for two more years, the multiple will have been justified; the question is whether a networking cycle can run four years without a pause.
The number that reconciles the two views is free cash flow yield: $12,767 million of free cash flow against a $421.74 billion market value is about 3.0%1516. That is a price for durable growth. If networking growth excluding hyperscalers falls below 10% in fiscal 2027, the yield will look like a cyclical peak rather than a new level.
