Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Cisco's orders grew 35% while its product revenue grew 24%, and the difference is being financed by its own supplier commitments.

Orders are running well ahead of revenue, which cuts two ways. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 Cisco's product orders rose 35%1, while product revenue rose 24% and total revenue 18%2. AI infrastructure revenue for the year was about $4 billion against $9.3 billion of orders3.

The good reading is that fiscal 2027 revenue is largely spoken for. Cisco expects $7.5 billion of AI infrastructure revenue in fiscal 20274.

The risk is that the gap is filled by long delivery times and supply constraints. Cisco raised its inventory purchase commitments to $17,165 million from $7,599 million5, and said "A significant portion of these commitments supports products sold to hyperscalers and other large customers"6. If orders are later reduced, Cisco holds the commitments.

The inventory has already been bought. Cisco's inventories rose to $5.7 billion from $3.2 billion7, which means much of the material for the fiscal 2027 AI revenue is in its warehouses or on order. If the orders convert, that is efficient; if they slip, Cisco carries the stock.

The number to watch is the conversion: AI infrastructure revenue reaching $7.5 billion in fiscal 2027 would mean the orders were real; a shortfall with commitments still high would mean Cisco carried its customers' timing risk.
