⚠ One Quarter Carried the YearModerate threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's security line shrank for two quarters of fiscal 2026 and was rescued by a few long Splunk contracts in the fourth.
Cisco's security revenue grew in fiscal 2026 only because of its last quarter. By quarter it was $1,980 million, down 2%1; $2,018 million, down 4%2; $2,008 million, flat3; and $2,226 million, up 14%4.
The finance chief explained the jump: "The 14% growth had an anomaly with some sizable on-prem Splunk deals with longer durations"5. On-premises software licensed for several years is recognised largely upfront, so a few large contracts can lift one quarter at the expense of later ones.
That makes the full-year 2% a flattering number. Without the fourth quarter's large deals, security would have shrunk.
Revenue recognition is the mechanism. Multi-year on-premises licences are recognised largely when delivered, so a quarter with several large ones looks strong and the following quarters carry none of it. The finance chief's guidance of mid-to-high single digits for the first quarter of fiscal 20276 is the first test of what the line does without them.
The fourth quarter's security revenue, $2,226 million7, was about 27% of the year's total8. For a subscription business that should be spread evenly across quarters, that concentration is itself the evidence of large, upfront licence deals.
Guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 is mid-to-high single-digit growth9. If growth falls back to zero once the long-duration deals pass, the business has not turned; if it holds above 5%, the new products are starting to count.
