✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — the future bets

Cisco has guided to 15% growth in fiscal 2027, and about a third of it is price increases passed on from memory costs.

Cisco's bets for the next few years are mostly extensions of what it already does, and management has put numbers on them. Fiscal 2027 guidance is revenue of $72.2 billion to $73.4 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $5.05 to $5.11, with GAAP earnings of $4.00 to $4.061. The midpoint implies growth of about 15%2.

Two years of double-digit growth, if the guidance holds.

Four bets carry that guidance. The largest is AI infrastructure: $7.5 billion of revenue expected in fiscal 2027 against about $4 billion in fiscal 20263. The second is security: new products that Cisco says have added over 6,400 net new customers since launch4. The third is margin: a non-GAAP operating margin guided to 35.5% to 36.5% in the first quarter5. The fourth is a return to small acquisitions after Splunk, with two bought in the fourth quarter6.

Price is part of the plan. The finance chief expects price increases to contribute 4 to 5 points of fiscal 2027 growth7, about a third of the guided increase8.

The bets are sensible and near. None requires a new market; all depend on the hardware cycle continuing for another year.

The track record of guidance is good. Cisco began fiscal 2026 guiding to revenue of $59.0 billion to $60.0 billion9, raised it to $60.2 billion to $61.0 billion in November10, $61.2 billion to $61.7 billion in February11 and $62.8 billion to $63.0 billion in May12, and delivered $63.3 billion, above the top of the range13. A company that raises its forecast four times in a year is either conservative or riding a stronger cycle than it expected; fiscal 2026 was probably both.

GAAP guidance shows the same step. Cisco expects GAAP earnings of $4.00 to $4.06 a share in fiscal 202714, against $3.33 in fiscal 202615, an increase of about 21% at the midpoint16. That is faster than the guided revenue growth, which assumes the operating margin keeps rising.

The number that will judge them is fiscal 2027 revenue against the $72.8 billion midpoint17. Meeting it with price contributing less than 5 points would show real demand; missing it would show fiscal 2026 was the peak of a cycle.
