Acacia: Optics as a Second ProductNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco now sells about a billion dollars a quarter of the optics that connect AI servers, bundled with its own switch chips.
Cisco's optics business has become a second product in the AI data centre. Acacia's optical products are reported inside the Networking category1, and the finance chief said on the fourth-quarter call that "Our Acacia Optics business had another $1 billion quarter"2.
A billion dollars in the quarter would be about a tenth of Networking's $9,791 million34. Optics is sold with every high-speed switch port: a cluster of AI servers needs transceivers at both ends of every link. Cisco's growth in networking was driven by "Cisco Silicon One based systems and optics"5, so the two are sold together.
That bundle is the argument for Cisco in the data centre. A hyperscaler can buy switches and the optics that go in them from one supplier whose chips and optics were designed to work together.
The limit is that the optics are sold to the same few hyperscaler buyers as the switches, so they add revenue without adding customers.
Optics also sit inside a legal fence. Cisco's 10-K reports that in the Ramot case over optical transceivers the court granted summary judgment of non-infringement before trial6. The business Cisco is building its AI position on has already had to defend itself once.
The figure to follow is the quarterly optics revenue management cites. Staying at or above $1 billion a quarter would show Cisco has a second product in the AI data centre; a fall would show optics was a one-cycle windfall.
Another $1bn quarter in Q4 FY2026.
The second product in the AI data centre; a fall well below $1bn would mean optics was a one-cycle windfall.
