⚠ The Recurring Share Fell Five PointsModerate threat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Subscription fell from 55.6% to 50.5% of Cisco's revenue in one year, because the hardware grew and the software did not.

Cisco became less of a subscription business in fiscal 2026, by its own measure. Subscription revenue was about 50.9% of revenue in fiscal 2024, 55.6% in fiscal 2025 and 50.5% in fiscal 20261.

Subscription share of revenue (%)50.9FY2455.6FY2550.5FY26Cisco Form 10-K FY2026; shares calculated
Up with Splunk, down with the hardware.

The cause is benign in one sense: product revenue rose from $41,608 million to $48,295 million2, most of it networking hardware sold outright to cloud buyers. But investors paying a higher multiple for Cisco's recurring revenue are paying for a share that went down.

It also changes how the business behaves in a downturn. Hardware bought outright can be deferred; subscriptions renew. A company with half its revenue on subscription holds up better than one with a third.

The fourth quarter showed the other side. Software revenue was $6.2 billion, up 11%3, the best quarter of the year, helped by the long Splunk contracts. One strong quarter does not reverse a year in which the recurring share fell five points.

Should the subscription share fall below half in fiscal 2027 as AI revenue grows, Cisco's revenue will be more cyclical than the one the market has been valuing.
