Twenty-Two Percent Fewer SharesNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco retired more than a fifth of its shares in eleven years, which is why its earnings per share nearly doubled while its profits rose by half.
The buyback has done what it was meant to: each Cisco share owns more of the company. Diluted shares were 5,146 million in fiscal 20151, 4,881 million in fiscal 2018 and 4,254 million in fiscal 20202, 4,105 million in fiscal 20233 and 3,987 million in fiscal 20264, a fall of about 22.5%5.
The cost was large. Cisco spent $73,629 million on buybacks between fiscal 2018 and fiscal 20266789, the largest amounts in the two years after the Tax Act let it bring cash home.
The effect on earnings per share is visible. Net income was $8,981 million in fiscal 2015 and $13,267 million in fiscal 2026, up about 48%, while diluted earnings per share rose from $1.75 to $3.33, up about 90%101112.
That gap between profit growth and per-share growth is the buyback's contribution. It is real, but it is financial engineering on top of a business growing slowly.
Shares outstanding were 3,946 million at the fiscal year end and 3,942,586,873 on 27 August 202613. The count continued to fall after the year ended, though slowly: at the fiscal 2026 average price, $6.1 billion retired 76 million shares14, about 1.9% of the company15.
The fastest shrinkage came right after the Tax Act. Diluted shares fell from 4,881 million in fiscal 2018 to 4,254 million in fiscal 202016, about 12.8% in two years17, as Cisco spent $38,238 million on buybacks in fiscal 2018 and 20191819. Since then the pace has been much slower.
The shrinkage is slowing. Diluted shares fell only from 3,998 million to 3,987 million in fiscal 202620, as a higher share price bought fewer shares. A share count flat or rising in fiscal 2027 would mean the buyback has stopped adding to per-share value.
Diluted shares down only 0.3% in FY2026.
The per-share effect of buybacks; a flat or rising count would mean buybacks only offset stock grants.
