✦ Galileo and Astrix: Small Deals After SplunkThin moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — the future bets

Cisco is back to buying small companies to refresh the security and observability lines Splunk was supposed to carry.

After paying $27,090 million for Splunk1, Cisco has gone back to buying small companies. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 it acquired Galileo Technologies, a privately held observability company, and Astrix Securities, a privately held security company focused on non-human identity security2.

Q4 FY2026 revenue growth, acquired-into lines (%)+14%Security+6%ObservabilityCisco Q4 FY2026 results release
A better quarter for both.

The targets fit the two lines that grew least. Observability revenue was $275 million in the fourth quarter, up 6%, and security $2,226 million, up 14%3, after full-year growth of 4% and 2%4.

Small deals are cheaper to integrate than Splunk and easier to judge: each either adds a product customers buy or it does not.

The balance sheet limits how far this can go. Cisco carries net debt of about $13.6 billion5 and returns nearly all its free cash flow6, so larger purchases would need more borrowing.

The deals also reflect what the restructuring plan says Cisco wants to invest in: "silicon, optics, security and AI"7. Two small security and observability purchases in the same quarter as a restructuring charge of $511 million8 show money being moved from old businesses to new ones.

The two acquired-into lines together sold $2,501 million in the fourth quarter9; if that grows faster than the rest of Cisco in fiscal 2027, the small deals are working.

Whether the acquired-into lines grow; slower growth than the rest of Cisco would mean the deals are not working.
