Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Goodwill is 46% of Cisco's assets, and because it is tested by region, a disappointing Splunk would not show as an impairment.

Cisco's balance sheet is now mostly acquisition premiums. Goodwill was $59,477 million at the end of fiscal 20261, about 46% of total assets of $129,637 million2. Purchased intangibles added $7,557 million3.

Goodwill by segment, end FY2026 ($M)36,686Americas14,482EMEA8,309APJCCisco Form 10-K FY2026
Tested by region, not by business.

Most of it is attributed to the Americas, $36,686 million, with $14,482 million in EMEA and $8,309 million in APJC4.

Cisco says a hypothetical 10% decline in the fair value of each reporting unit "would not result in an impairment"5. That is a meaningful cushion, and it reflects the fact that Cisco's reporting units are its geographic segments, where hardware and software are pooled.

The amortisation of what was bought shows in the income statement. Amortisation of purchased intangibles in operating expenses was $698 million in fiscal 2024, $1,028 million in fiscal 2025 and $916 million in fiscal 20266, a cost that falls away over time but that reduces reported profit in the years Splunk should be proving itself.

The pooling is also the risk. Because goodwill is tested by region rather than by business, a weak Splunk can hide inside a strong Americas. The warning will not be an impairment; it will be software growth staying near 4% while the goodwill stays at $59 billion.
