Support Contracts: $15 Billion at 68.8%Wide moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco earns a quarter of its gross profit renting support on equipment it sold years ago, at a better margin than the equipment itself.

The most valuable thing Cisco sells is permission to keep running what it sold years ago. Services revenue, mostly technical support and maintenance on installed equipment, was $15,030 million in fiscal 20261, about 24% of revenue2, and it carried a gross margin of 68.8% against 63.2% on products3. Services produced $10,346 million of gross profit, a quarter of the company's total4.

Services revenue ($M)11,993FY1612,621FY1813,323FY2013,539FY2214,550FY2415,046FY2515,030FY26Cisco Forms 10-K FY2018, FY2021, FY2024 and FY2026
A quarter more than ten years ago, and no higher than last year.

The line has grown slowly for most of a decade, dipping only in fiscal 2022, from $13,804 million to $13,539 million56, and marginally in fiscal 2026. It was $11,993 million in fiscal 20167 and $13,323 million in fiscal 20208, which makes fiscal 2026 about 25% higher than ten years earlier9. The margin has also risen, from 66.8% in fiscal 2022 to 68.8%1011.

The reason customers pay is that a campus network is not something a company replaces lightly. Every switch, router and wireless controller runs Cisco software that needs updates, security fixes and a telephone number to call when it fails. Support is sold as a contract, often for several years, and Cisco had $15,964 million of deferred services revenue at the end of fiscal 202612.

Geography shows how settled this is. Services revenue fell 1% in the Americas, rose 3% in EMEA and was flat in APJC in fiscal 202613: a mature annuity in every region, growing nowhere and shrinking nowhere much.

Almost all of the line recurs. Subscription services revenue was $13,663 million in fiscal 2026 against $13,743 million in fiscal 202514, about 91% of services15. The rest is project work, which moves with product sales and gives the line what little variability it has.

This is the part of the business a new entrant cannot buy. If the services gross margin slides from 68.8% toward the product margin, customers will have started to negotiate support the way they negotiate hardware.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Services margin 68.8% and rising; revenue flat.
