The Revenue LinesNarrow moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

More than half of Cisco's revenue is networking, and in fiscal 2026 networking supplied almost all of its growth.

Cisco reports its revenue in five groups of products and services, a presentation it adopted in fiscal 2024, when it "conformed our product revenue for prior years to the current year presentation"1. On that basis fiscal 2026 revenue of $63,325 million was: networking $34,668 million, services $15,030 million, security $8,232 million, collaboration $4,300 million and observability $1,095 million2. The chart in this app shows the five bands for fiscal 2022 to 2026, and they reconcile exactly to reported revenue.

More than half networking.

Cisco's reportable segments are geographic, not these lines: the Americas, EMEA and APJC, measured by revenue and gross margin3. Cisco does not allocate research, sales or administrative costs to segments4, and it discloses no profit by product line.

The lines moved very differently in fiscal 2026. Networking grew 22%, collaboration and observability 4%, security 2%, and services slightly declined5. Networking supplied about 95% of the revenue increase6.

Margins are disclosed only for products and services: 63.2% and 68.8%7.

The product categories have been redrawn several times, which makes long histories hard to read. Before fiscal 2020 Cisco reported Infrastructure Platforms, Applications and Security8; before that, in fiscal 2016, it still reported Switching, NGN Routing, Collaboration, Data Center, Wireless, Service Provider Video and Security separately9. Service Provider Video fell from $3,969 million in fiscal 2014 to $2,424 million in fiscal 201610, and Cisco sold parts of it in fiscal 2016 and 20191112. Each redrawing makes the remaining lines look steadier than the business they describe.

Product margins have risen over the period while services held higher. Product gross margin was 61.0% in fiscal 2022, 61.5% in fiscal 202313, 63.5% in fiscal 2024, 63.7% in fiscal 2025 and 63.2% in fiscal 202614. Services moved from 66.8% to 68.8%1516. The spread between them, about five and a half points in fiscal 202617, is the premium customers pay for support over hardware.

The lines describe a hardware company with a large support annuity and three smaller software businesses. Networking's share of revenue, about 54.7% in fiscal 202618, is the figure to follow: rising further makes Cisco more exposed to the networking cycle, and a falling share with overall growth intact would mean the software lines had finally started to carry weight.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Networking +22%; the other lines between -0.1% and +4%.
