ObservabilityThin moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco's observability line was built from AppDynamics and Splunk, and its application-monitoring suite shrank in fiscal 2026.
Observability is Cisco's smallest product line, $1,095 million in fiscal 2026, up 4%1, about 1.7% of revenue2. In the fourth quarter it sold $275 million, up 6%3.
What is inside is "our observability suite and network assurance offerings"4: software that monitors applications and networks and alerts operators to faults. Cisco describes its observability solution as "Splunk combined with AppDynamics"5, and in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 it added Galileo Technologies, a privately held observability company6.
The history is short and acquisition-led. On Cisco's older categories the nearest line, Optimized Application Experiences, sold $524 million in fiscal 20207. On the current basis observability was $581 million in fiscal 2022, $661 million in fiscal 20238, $837 million in fiscal 2024 and $1,055 million in fiscal 20259. It has almost doubled since fiscal 202210, with the Splunk purchase in March 2024 adding the observability part of Splunk's revenue.
How it is paid: by software subscription, on multi-year terms.
Profitability is not disclosed by line. Growth slowed from about 26% in fiscal 2024 and 2025 to about 4% in fiscal 202611, and Cisco said growth was "partially offset by a decline in our observability suite offerings"12: the network part grew while the application part shrank.
The competitors are specialists: Datadog and Dynatrace13. The outlook depends on whether Cisco can tie observability to its networks well enough to hold customers the specialists are courting.
The acquisition timing makes the growth figures hard to read. Splunk joined on 18 March 202414, contributing about $1.4 billion of revenue in fiscal 202415, split between security and observability; the observability part lifted fiscal 2024 and 2025 growth. Cisco's pro forma revenue for fiscal 2024, as if Splunk had been owned all year, was $56,761 million16 against reported revenue of $53,803 million17.
The verdict would change if observability returned to double-digit growth in fiscal 2027 with the suite growing again. If the suite declines for a second year, the application-monitoring business Cisco bought twice will be shrinking inside its own customers.
Growth fell from about 26% to 4%; suite declined.
The acquired monitoring software on its own merits; a second year of suite decline would mean specialists are winning.
