⚠ The Campus Is Arista's Next TargetModerate threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco is defending its campus fortress with about 2,600 fewer salespeople than two years ago, just as Arista arrives.
A direct threat to Cisco's installed base comes from the company that already beat it in the data centre. Arista's pages in this collection describe its push into enterprise and campus networking as a move onto Cisco's home ground, and do not need retelling here.
Cisco is defending with fewer salespeople. Its worldwide sales and marketing functions had about 28,000 employees in fiscal 20241, about 25,600 in fiscal 20252 and about 25,400 in fiscal 20263. Sales and marketing spending was still $11,559 million4, but it is being spread across a wider product list.
The defence is the channel and the support contract, not the salesperson. A substantial portion of Cisco's products and services is sold through channel partners5, whose own businesses are built around selling and supporting Cisco.
Cisco's response is to make the campus harder to leave. On the fourth-quarter call it said about 4,500 customers had signed up for the white-glove programme of Cisco Cloud Control6, a single console for managing Cisco networks. Management software that spans a customer's whole estate is exactly the kind of habit a rival must break.
The test is Cisco's campus switching share. IDC measured campus growth at 14.1% in the first quarter of 20267; if that falls below the market's growth while Arista's enterprise revenue grows, the fortress will have its first breach.
