⚠ A Backlog Growing Slower Than RevenueLow threat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Cisco's contracted backlog grew 7% while revenue grew 12%, so more of the company now rests on orders it has yet to take.

Cisco's backlog grew less than half as fast as its revenue. Remaining performance obligations rose 7% in fiscal 20261, while revenue rose about 11.8%2. Quarter by quarter the gap widened: the backlog's growth slowed from 7% after the first quarter to 4% after the third34, while revenue growth accelerated from 8% to 12%56.

Remaining performance obligations by quarter end, FY2026 ($bn)42.9 (+7%)Q143.4 (+5%)Q243.5 (+4%)Q346.7 (+7%)Q4Cisco quarterly results releases and Form 10-K, FY2026
Nearly flat for three quarters.

The reason is the mix. Hardware sold to cloud and AI customers is shipped and recognised within months; it does not sit in the backlog for years the way a five-year support or security contract does. So a revenue surge led by networking makes the contracted base a smaller share of the whole.

That is not a problem while orders keep coming. It becomes one when they pause, because there is less contracted revenue to carry the company through.

Software is where the backlog should come from, and software grew 4% in fiscal 20267. Total annual recurring revenue grew 3% and services recurring revenue 2%8. Until the recurring businesses grow faster, the contracted book will keep falling behind whatever the hardware does.

Backlog was about 74% of a year's revenue at the end of fiscal 20269. A steady fall in that ratio would mean the business was becoming more cyclical, not less.
