⚠ Inventory Up 80%Moderate threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's inventory rose 80% in a year to feed hyperscaler demand and memory costs, which is why its cash flow did not grow with its profits.
Cisco's balance sheet has taken on the AI build-out's working capital. Inventories were $5.7 billion at the end of fiscal 2026 against $3.2 billion a year earlier1, an increase of about 80%2. Cisco attributes it to "increased demand for our Cisco Silicon One and the impact of higher memory prices"3.
Customer financing grew too. Financing receivables rose to $8.3 billion from $6.5 billion4. Some of what Cisco sells, it lends the money to buy.
The result shows in cash. Operating cash flow was $14,177 million, level with $14,193 million a year earlier5, although net income rose about 30%6.
Some of this was a choice to lock in supply. The finance chief said Cisco had made investments such as in Nanya on the memory side7, and higher memory prices are one of the two reasons the 10-K gives for the inventory increase8. Paying more for memory now is a bet that memory will not get cheaper before the equipment ships.
Inventory built for strong demand is only a problem if the demand fades. Should inventory keep growing faster than sales in fiscal 2027, Cisco will be holding stock its customers have not yet committed to take.
