Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco's security line more than doubled with Splunk and then grew 2%, carried in the last quarter by a few long contracts.
Security is Cisco's second-largest product line, $8,232 million in fiscal 20261, about 13% of revenue2. It grew 2%3. In the fourth quarter it sold $2,226 million, up 14%4.
What is inside: "Network Security, Identity and Access Management, SASE, and Identity and Agentic Security solutions"5. That means firewalls, secure remote access, identity checks and, since Splunk, security information and event management. In fiscal 2025 Cisco's description also listed threat detection offerings "which includes the offerings from Splunk"6.
The history is two stories. Organically, on Cisco's older product basis, security grew from $1,969 million in fiscal 20167 to $3,382 million in fiscal 20218. On the current basis it was $3,699 million in fiscal 2022 and $3,859 million in fiscal 20239, then $5,075 million in fiscal 2024 and $8,094 million in fiscal 202510, when it grew 59% with Splunk11. Since fiscal 2022 the line has grown about 2.2 times, mostly by purchase12.
How it is paid: increasingly by subscription. Cisco sells security as software licences with multi-year terms, and large on-premises Splunk contracts are recognised largely upfront, which is why the fourth quarter jumped on "sizable on-prem Splunk deals with longer durations"13.
Profitability by line is not disclosed; Cisco reports only product and services margins.
Growth in fiscal 2026 was weak until the last quarter: down 2% and 4% in the first two quarters, flat in the third141516. Cisco reported over 6,400 net new customers for its new security products17, and guided the first quarter of fiscal 2027 to mid-to-high single-digit growth18.
The organic record is worth remembering. On the oldest product basis, security sold $1,566 million in fiscal 2014 and $1,969 million in fiscal 201619, and $2,152 million in fiscal 201720. For most of that decade Cisco grew security faster than the rest of the company without buying anything large. That record is the benchmark the post-Splunk business now has to beat.
The fiscal 2026 fourth quarter also brought an acquisition aimed at the new category: Astrix Securities, focused on non-human identity security21. Identity for software agents is the part of security Cisco is betting will grow as companies deploy AI agents, and it is a market where no specialist has yet built a large installed base.
The competitors are specialists: Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, CrowdStrike and Zscaler22. The outlook depends on whether the network-attached bundle can beat them. The verdict would change for the better if security grew above 8% in fiscal 2027 without an acquisition; another year near 2% would confirm that Cisco's security business grows only when it buys.
FY2026 +2%; Q1 FY2027 guided mid-to-high single digits.
Organic growth after Splunk; another year near 2% would mean the line grows only by acquisition.
