$17.2 Billion Committed for a Few BuyersThin moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco has committed $17.2 billion to suppliers, more than double a year earlier, largely to serve a few hyperscalers.

Cisco's revenue is diversified; its commitments to suppliers are not. Inventory purchase commitments were $17,165 million at the end of fiscal 2026 against $7,599 million a year earlier1, up about 126%2. Cisco says "A significant portion of these commitments supports products sold to hyperscalers and other large customers"3.

Inventory purchase commitments by maturity ($M)Under 1 year, FY2614,341Under 1 year, FY257,2021-3 years, FY262,5581-3 years, FY253203-5 years, FY26266Cisco Form 10-K FY2026
Doubled within a year, almost all near term.

Most are near term: $14,341 million due within a year, $2,558 million in one to three years and $266 million in three to five4. That is about 27% of a year's revenue committed to suppliers5.

The backlog on the other side does not show the same concentration. Remaining performance obligations of $46,734 million are split evenly between products and services6, and no customer concentration is disclosed within them.

So the concentration sits on the cost side. If a large customer delays, Cisco still owes its suppliers. Its filing warns that certain committed components "are qualified to a specific customer design"7.

The provisions show what happens when commitments meet weaker demand. Cisco recorded $819 million for inventory and purchase commitments in fiscal 2024, $493 million in fiscal 2025 and $387 million in fiscal 20268, from a commitment book less than half today's size. The new book is more than twice as large9.

Cisco has taken such losses before: provisions for inventory and purchase commitments were $819 million in fiscal 202410. Commitments are the number to watch; if they keep rising faster than orders in fiscal 2027, the concentration Cisco carries will be larger than the one it reports.

Exposure to a few large buyers on the cost side; commitments rising faster than orders would mean Cisco carries their timing risk.
