◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

American Express (AXP) — the variant view

The market is pricing American Express as a card company whose rewards bill is out of control; the fee and interest income that pay the bill are a steadier business than that.

📈 AXP valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →

The market has marked American Express down in 2026 while the company has told it that earnings will rise. The company was worth $254.84 billion at the end of 20251 and $206.30 billion on 28 September 20262, about 19% less3. Over the same months it raised its 2026 revenue growth guidance to 10% and held earnings guidance of $17.30 to $17.90 a share4.

A fifth of the value gone in nine months, with guidance intact.

On trailing figures the shares trade at about 18 times net income and 2.7 times revenue net of interest expense5. At the end of 2025 the multiple was about 23.5 times6. The forward P/E quoted by market data services was 16.567.

A plausible reading is that the market has noticed the rewards bill. The incentive lines rose from about 80% of discount revenue in the second quarter of 2025 to about 86% a year later8, and Card Member services grew 50%9. A reader who sees the merchant fee being handed back has reason to pay less for it.

What that reading may miss is the other half of the income statement. Net card fees were $9,993 million in 202510, growing at double digits for more than seven years, and they are collected in advance from people who chose to pay them. Net interest income of $17,364 million moves by about $19 million for a full point of rates11. Together they are about 38% of revenue12, and neither depends on the merchant rate.

There is a quieter point too. Berkshire Hathaway held 151.6 million shares, 22.5% of the company, at 30 June 2026, and has had a voting agreement with Amex since 199513. Its stake grows every time Amex buys back shares, without Berkshire buying any.

The market's own range shows the swing in sentiment. The shares traded between $290.97 and $387.49 over the fifty-two weeks to 28 September 2026, and analysts' average price target was $378.5414. At $305.50 the shares were near the bottom of that range, while book value per share rose from $46.45 at the end of 2025 to $48.42 in June 20261516.

The variant view is that the market is pricing a card lender with a rising rewards bill and not a membership business. The test is the 2026 result: earnings per share inside the $17.30 to $17.90 range with the incentive ratio still rising would show the fees and interest carrying the bill, and a multiple still below 20 after that would be the discount this page describes.
