✦ Deposits and the Banking RelationshipThin moat
American Express (AXP) — the future bets
About a tenth of U.S. Amex card members also bank with it, which makes deposits a funding tool today and a possible switching cost tomorrow.
American Express wants its cardholders to bank with it, and the gap between the two groups is the size of the opportunity. Customer deposits were $152,488 million at the end of 20251 and $156,973 million in June 20262. The company offers "high yield savings, business and consumer checking accounts, consumer installment loans and lines of credit"3.
On the second-quarter call, according to a third-party summary, management said about 10% of U.S. card members hold an American Express deposit account4. That leaves most of the base with no banking relationship at all.
The bet has two payoffs. Deposits fund the card loans cheaply and steadily, which is part of why a 100-basis-point rise in rates would change net interest income by only about $19 million5. And a cardholder who also keeps savings or a checking account with Amex has one more reason not to leave.
It also has limits. A savings account won with a good rate can be lost to a better one, and deposits bought with a high rate are funding, not a moat.
The funding side is already large: deposits were about 72.5% of total customer deposits and debt at the end of 202567. What is not proven is whether the banking products change behaviour.
Deposits have become most of the funding. Customer deposits of $152,488 million compared with long-term debt of $56,387 million and short-term borrowings of $1,371 million at the end of 20258. Every dollar of deposits gathered from a cardholder replaces a dollar Amex would otherwise borrow in the bond market.
The balance of funding has moved a long way. Customer deposits were about 72.5% of total customer deposits and debt at the end of 2025910, and a company that funds most of its loans that way can keep lending when bond markets are closed to it.
The deposit balance is the number that will answer it. It grew about 2.9% in the first half of 202611; if the share of card members with a deposit account rose well above a tenth while deposit growth came without a rising cost, Amex would be turning a funding tool into a second switching cost.
Deposits $152.5bn (Dec 2025) to $157.0bn (June 2026); about 10% of U.S. card members hold one.
How far banking has reached the card base; well above a tenth, deposits would become a second switching cost.
