The Fee People Pay to BelongWide moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

American Express cardholders pay an average of $131 a year per card when free cards are easy to find, and that choice is the clearest proof of the moat.

The second half of the American Express moat is paid by the cardholder, and it has become the part that grows fastest. Net card fees were $9,993 million in 20251, up from $4,042 million in 20192, about 2.47 times3. They were about 9% of revenue in 2019 and about 14% in 20254.

A growing share of a growing company.

A fee is a vote. Banks offer credit cards with no annual fee, and a large share of the holders of Amex's 86.6 million proprietary cards choose instead to pay before buying anything5. The average fee per card was $131 in the second quarter of 20266, and the company reported double-digit card-fee growth for 30 consecutive quarters to the end of 20257.

The fee is also the steadiest revenue Amex has. It is collected in advance, it does not depend on how much the cardholder borrows, and it held up in 2020, when net card fees rose to $4,664 million from $4,042 million even as billed business fell by about a fifth89.

What the cardholder pays for is a bundle: status, service, and benefits such as lounges, travel credits and dining offers. That bundle is also the weak point. The benefits cost money, and the cost has been growing faster than the fees. Card Member services expense was about 38% of net card fees in 2021 and about 61% in 202510.

The pages below look at the fee itself, the streak behind it, the Platinum card that leads it, and the new customers who pay it.

The fee also changes the cardholder's behaviour. Having paid in advance, a cardholder has a reason to use the card for most purchases to earn back the fee, which is why spending per proprietary card, $25,453 in 202511, is high. The fee and the spending reinforce each other: the benefits justify the fee, the fee encourages the spending, and the spending earns the merchant fee that pays for the benefits.

The company expects the streak to continue. On the second-quarter call management guided to card-fee growth in the high teens as an exit rate for the fourth quarter of 202612, as the Platinum repricing reaches more renewals.

The average also hides a wide range. Amex does not disclose Platinum card counts or fee levels, and many of its cards carry no fee at all; the rise in the average from $58 in 2019 to $131 in the second quarter of 20261314 comes from both more fee-paying cards and higher fees on them. Whichever mix produced it, the direction has not reversed in any year of the series.

Taken together, this is a wide moat being widened at a rising cost. Fees are growing, and the customers paying them are young, which should make the stream long. The ratio that decides whether it stays profitable is benefits to fees; if Card Member services climbed above three-quarters of card fees, the membership would be selling its perks at close to cost.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Net card fees $4,042M (2019) to $9,993M (2025); average fee per card $131 in Q2 2026.

The membership revenue; growth below 10% while benefit costs kept climbing would mean the fee had stopped earning its keep.
