A Write-Off Rate Near Two PercentNarrow moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

American Express kept card losses near 2% while its loan book grew by about three-quarters, which is what lending to heavy spenders looks like.

American Express lends mostly to people who spend a lot and pay their bills, and its loss rates show it. The net write-off rate on Card Member loans, principal only, was 2.2% in 2019, 2.4% in 2020 and 0.9% in 20211, then 1.8% in 2023 and 2.2% in 2024 and 20252. For consumer and small-business loans and receivables together it was 2.0% in 2025 and 2.0% in the second quarter of 20263.

Provisions flat for three years on a growing book.

Those rates held while the book grew. Card Member loans were $87.4 billion at the end of 20194 and $151,832 million at the end of 20255, about 74% more6. Provisions for credit losses were $4,923 million in 2023, $5,185 million in 2024 and $5,256 million in 20257: nearly flat for three years on a book that kept growing.

The discipline comes from the model. Amex chooses cardholders for spending rather than borrowing, and it can see the spending pattern on its own network before it extends more credit.

It also comes from the book's shape. Loans and receivables include charge-card balances that must be paid in full each month; at the end of 2025 Card Member receivables were $62,031 million8.

The second quarter of 2026 showed the book in good health. Provisions fell to $1,084 million from $1,405 million, a reserve release the company attributed to "further strengthening of portfolio credit performance"9.

The loan book's growth has been steady rather than sudden. Card Member loans were $125,995 million at the end of 2023, $139,674 million at the end of 2024 and $151,832 million at the end of 202510, growth of about 11% and 9%11. Billed business grew about 6% and 8% in those two years12, so loans have been growing a little faster than spending.

The write-off rate is the falsifier. It has been between 1.8% and 2.4% in every year shown except 20211314; a rise above 3% in a year without a recession would mean the loan growth had reached borrowers who were not the spenders the model is built on.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Principal write-off rate 2.2% in 2024 and 2025; 2.0% on consumer and small-business balances in Q2 2026.
