Card Member Services TripledNarrow moat
American Express (AXP) — moat facet
American Express tripled what it spends on cardholder benefits in four years, and the benefits have grown faster than the fees they justify.
Of the three incentive lines, the one growing fastest is the cost of the benefits themselves. Card Member services expense was $1,392 million in 2017 and $2,222 million in 20191, $1,993 million in 20212 and $6,057 million in 20253, about three times the 2021 figure4. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $1,949 million, up 50%5.
This line holds the tangible parts of the premium card: travel and lounge benefits, statement credits and service. Amex attributes the 2025 increase to "higher usage of Card Member benefits and the introduction of new U.S. Platinum benefits"6.
The rise is deliberate. Benefits are what justify a fee of several hundred dollars, and Amex has chosen to compete on them. Card fees grew from $5,195 million to $9,993 million over the same four years78, so the benefits bought a large increase in fee revenue.
But the benefits grew faster than the fees they bought. Card Member services rose about 204% from 2021 to 2025 while net card fees rose about 92%9. Each dollar of new fee income has cost more in benefits than the dollar before it.
Some of the cost is physical. The company opened its 31st Centurion Lounge at the end of 202510, and it says it faces "heightened competition" for lounge space in hub airports11. Lounges have to be built, staffed and expanded as cardholders use them more.
The line also reaches beyond travel. Amex sponsors entertainment for cardholders, including Formula 112, and runs dining benefits through Resy and Tock13. Each benefit costs money and each is part of what the fee buys; the company competes, in its own words, for "dining experiences" as well as lounge space14.
The number that settles it is Card Member services growth against card-fee growth. In the second quarter of 2026 it was 50% against 15%1516. If benefits kept growing more than three times as fast as fees through 2026, the refresh would have bought loyalty at the price of the margin on it.
Card Member services $1,993M (2021) to $6,057M (2025); +50% in Q2 2026.
The cost of the benefits against the fees they justify; growth three times the fees for a year would mean loyalty bought at the margin.
