The Platinum RefreshNarrow moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

Platinum is the fastest-growing American Express card, and every refresh raises what the benefits cost faster than what the fee brings in.

The card that best tests whether people will pay American Express more is Platinum, and in 2026 they are paying. In its second-quarter release the company wrote that "our Platinum portfolio is now the fastest growing in our U.S. Consumer business"1. The refreshed U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum cards were launched "at the end of the third quarter" of 20252, and Amex describes the refresh as a way to "enhance their value propositions, increase engagement with existing customers and attract new customers"3.

The benefits now cost two-thirds of what the fee brings in.

A refresh works in two directions at once. The fee goes up, and so do the benefits: credits, lounge access and partner offers the cardholder can use during the year. Card fees rose 15% in the second quarter of 20264. Card Member services expense, the line that holds most of those benefits, rose 50% to $1,949 million5.

The annual report names the cause. Card Member services expense rose in 2025 "primarily due to higher usage of Card Member benefits and the introduction of new U.S. Platinum benefits"6. The same phrase appears for the business cards, where the increase came from "the introduction of new U.S. Business Platinum benefits"7.

What makes the refresh work is that the cardholder values the benefits at more than they cost Amex. A travel credit bought wholesale from a partner, or a lounge visit that uses space Amex has already paid for, can be worth more to the cardholder than its marginal cost. That gap is the profit in the fee.

Management gave its own reading of the demand on the second-quarter call. It attributed growth in U.S. consumer billings to Platinum acquisition, upgrades and higher spending by long-standing cardholders8, and said the Platinum benefits were expected to compound as fee repricing flowed through9, figures and characterisations drawn from a third-party summary of the call.

It also means the refresh is judged on two numbers, not one. In the second quarter of 2026 card fees were $2,862 million and Card Member services $1,949 million10; the benefits cost about 68 cents for every dollar of fees11. In 2021 the figure was about 38 cents12. If it reached a dollar, the cardholder would be getting the benefits for free and the fee would no longer be a moat but a subsidy.
