Delta: Thirteen Percent of the SpendingNarrow moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

Delta cards carry about 13% of American Express spending and 21% of its loans, and Delta says it was paid $8.2 billion for them in 2025.

No American Express relationship matters as much as Delta, and both companies say so. Amex calls Delta "our largest strategic partner"1; the Delta cobrand portfolio represented about 13% of worldwide billed business and about 21% of worldwide Card Member loans at the end of 20252. At 2025 volumes, 13% of billed business is about $217 billion of spending on Delta cards3.

Up five points in six years.

The share has been rising. Delta cards were about 8% of billed business in 20194, 9% in 20205 and 12% in 20246, while the loan share stayed near a fifth. Between 2021 and 2023 Amex measured the portfolio against network volumes instead, so those years are not directly comparable78.

Delta's filing gives the other side of the bargain. In its 2025 annual report it says: "In 2025, remuneration from American Express totaled $8.2 billion, which we expect to grow to $10 billion over the next few years"9. In 2024 the figure was $7.4 billion10. Delta's word is remuneration, and it covers the miles Amex buys for cardholders and other payments under the agreement; Amex does not disclose its own figure.

Set against Amex's accounts, the number is striking. $8.2 billion is about 76% of Amex's 2025 net income and about 82% of its net card fees11. Amex pays that because the Delta card brings spending, fees and loans that, together, earn more.

The relationship also runs in other directions. Delta accepts Amex cards as a merchant and is a corporate payments customer12, and it holds a purchasing card with Amex for jet fuel, with $1.1 billion outstanding at the end of 202513.

The benefits keep being added. In the second quarter of 2026 Amex introduced new travel benefits for Delta SkyMiles card members14. Every new benefit makes the card more attractive and the renewal more expensive, because each is paid for inside the agreement.

The share of billed business is the figure to follow. It rose from about 8% to about 13% in six years; if it passed 15% before the 2029 renewal, a single negotiation would decide the fate of about a seventh of the spending and a fifth of the loans, and Delta would know it.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Delta 8% of billed business in 2019, 13% in 2025; Delta remuneration $7.4bn (2024) to $8.2bn (2025).

About 13% (2025), from about 8% (2019)

The dependence on one partner; above 15% before the 2029 renewal, one negotiation would decide a seventh of the spending.
