American Express (AXP) — threat to the moat
Amex has made double-digit fee growth a quarterly promise, so the first single-digit quarter will be judged as a break in the moat even if it is only a gap between refreshes.
A streak that a company reports every quarter becomes something investors count on, and that changes how a slowdown will be received. American Express has told shareholders its card fees grew by double digits for 30 consecutive quarters to the end of 20251.
The growth has come in steps, each tied to a product refresh. The most recent was the refresh of the U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum cards at the end of the third quarter of 20252. Refreshes raise fees and benefits together, and the fee growth they create lasts about as long as it takes for the existing cardholders to renew at the new price.
Between refreshes, fee growth depends on new accounts and on cardholders moving up to more expensive cards. Amex acquired 12.5 million new proprietary cards in 20253 and 3 million in the second quarter of 2026, on the company's own call4.
The pace of those steps cannot rise forever. Net card fees were about 14% of revenue in 20255; to keep growing at 15% they must keep outgrowing the company, which means each refresh has to find customers willing to pay more than the last time.
When the streak ends it will probably end quietly, with a quarter of 8% or 9% between refreshes. The line to watch is the average fee per card, $131 in the second quarter of 20266; a quarter in which it fell would say the mix had turned toward cheaper cards, which is the first way the streak could break.
