The Revenue LinesWide moat
American Express (AXP) — moat facet
Half of American Express's revenue is the U.S. consumer card; a quarter of its profit is the network, earned on a tenth of the revenue.
American Express reports four segments, and they are four quite different businesses. In 2025 U.S. Consumer Services earned revenue net of interest expense of $34,814 million, Commercial Services $16,926 million, International Card Services $13,000 million and Global Merchant and Network Services $7,759 million1.
The four add up to $72,499 million, a little more than the company's $72,229 million23. The difference is Corporate and Other, which had revenue of minus $270 million and a pretax loss of $2,254 million4; it holds items not allocated to the segments.
Profit is spread very differently from revenue. U.S. Consumer Services earned about 42% of the four segments' $16,049 million of pretax income, Global Merchant and Network Services about 25%, Commercial Services about 23% and International Card Services about 10%5. The network, a tenth of the revenue, earns a quarter of the profit.
That split depends on how Amex allocates the merchant fee. The card segments book "the issuer component" of discount revenue and the network segment "the network and acquirer component"6. The overall revenue mix by type tells the same story from another angle: discount revenue was about 51.8% of the total in 2025, net interest income about 24.0% and net card fees about 13.8%7.
The segments have existed in this form since the third quarter of 2022, when Amex realigned into four from three8; 2020 and 2021 were recast then. Before that it reported Global Consumer Services Group, Global Commercial Services and Global Merchant and Network Services9, on a basis that is not comparable.
Growth has been fastest in the U.S. consumer business, whose revenue grew about 2.1 times from 2020 to 2025, and slowest in the network and commercial businesses, about 1.8 times each10.
The segment results also show where 2026 is coming from. In the first quarter of 2026 pretax income was $1,757 million in U.S. Consumer Services, $816 million in Commercial Services, $781 million in International Card Services and $1,115 million in Global Merchant and Network Services11; in the second quarter the four figures were $2,065 million, $970 million, $477 million and $1,128 million12. The U.S. consumer business is carrying the year, and the international segment fell back after a strong first quarter.
The segment to watch is the one that holds the premium card. U.S. Consumer Services' share of segment revenue rose from about 45% in 2020 to about 48% in 202513; if it kept rising while its margin stayed near a fifth, American Express would be ever more a U.S. consumer card business whose returns depend on how much the rewards cost.
USCS 48% of segment revenue and 42% of segment pretax income; GMNS margin about 51%.
Reliance on the U.S. consumer card; a steady rise with a flat margin would make returns hang on the rewards bill.
