American Express (AXP) — threat to the moat

American Express has been buying its shares at rising prices, and the 2025 purchases are underwater at today's price.

The buyback is only as good as the price paid, and American Express has been paying more. It bought 23.9 million shares at an average of $242.65 in 20241, 16.8 million at $312.87 in 20252, and 7.1 million at $315.77 in the second quarter of 20263. The shares were $305.50 on 28 September 20264.

Paid more in 2025 than the shares fetch now.

At the end of 2025 the company was worth $254.84 billion5, about 23.5 times that year's net income6. Buying at that multiple returns about 4% a year in earnings on each dollar spent, before growth.

That is still a reasonable price for a business that earns about a third on equity and has grown earnings per share at double-digit rates. But the arithmetic is less generous than it was when the shares traded at about 13 times earnings in 20157.

The market has since moved against the recent purchases. The company's value fell about 19% from the end of 2025 to $206.30 billion89, and the shares bought in 2025 are below cost.

Shareholders can judge the policy against the dividend too. Dividends declared rose to $3.28 a share in 202510, and the quarterly rate for 2026 is $0.9511, a yield of about 1.2% at the September price12. The buyback is the larger lever, and so its price matters more.

A buyback that loses money on paper for a year is not a failure. The failure would be a policy that kept buying at the same pace regardless of price. The quarterly repurchase figures, $2,241 million in the second quarter of 202613, will show whether the company buys more when the shares are cheaper, as a disciplined buyer should, or merely buys steadily.
