OncologyNarrow moat
Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
Oncology grew 17% a year on Amgen's own BiTE drugs, but half the line faces patent expiries in 2027 and 2028.
Oncology is Amgen's steadiest growth line. It sold $6,660 million in 20251, about 18.1% of total revenues2. Inside are BLINCYTO, $1,559 million; IMDELLTRA, $627 million; Vectibix, $1,175 million; KYPROLIS, $1,412 million; LUMAKRAS, $363 million; and Nplate, $1,524 million3. XGEVA and the cancer biosimilars are counted elsewhere.
The history is almost unbroken growth. The band sold $2,895 million in 20194 and rose in every year to 2025, about 2.3 times5. Growth in 2025 was about 17.2%6, and in the second quarter of 2026 the band sold $1,953 million against $1,660 million a year earlier, about 17.7%7.
The drivers are Amgen's own science. BLINCYTO and IMDELLTRA are BiTE molecules from the same platform8, and together they sold $760 million in the second quarter of 20269. Nplate grew 17% on 13% volume growth and a higher net selling price10, and Vectibix 11%11.
These drugs are paid for mostly by hospitals and insurers, and several grow on volume rather than price: IMDELLTRA's second-quarter rise was primarily driven by volume growth12. In China, BeOne sells BLINCYTO and KYPROLIS and shares the profits equally13. Amgen reports no profit by line.
The outlook is mixed within the band. KYPROLIS fell 17% in the second quarter on lower volume14, and its American compound patents expire in December 202715; Nplate's formulation patent follows in February 202816. Those two sold $2,936 million in 202517.
The band also contains old drugs that keep growing. Vectibix, launched in 2006 for wild-type RAS metastatic colorectal cancer18, sold $1,175 million in 202519 and grew 11% in the second quarter of 2026, primarily on volume20. BeOne sells XGEVA, BLINCYTO and KYPROLIS in China and keeps those rights for so long as the products are sold there21.
The band's test is 2028. If BLINCYTO and IMDELLTRA grow enough to cover KYPROLIS's and Nplate's patent losses, oncology keeps growing; if the band's growth falls below 5% in 2028, the older half's decline will have caught up with the newer half's rise.
Up about 18% in Q2 2026.
The BiTE drugs against the older half's expiries; growth below 5% in 2028 would mean the losses caught up.
