⚠ Copy Against CopyModerate threat

Amgen (AMGN) — threat to the moat

Amgen's older biosimilars shrink once rivals arrive, so the business grows only by launching new copies faster than the old ones decline.

A biosimilar maker sells a product that is, by design, interchangeable with several others. That leaves the choice to the buyer, and in America the buyer is usually a benefit manager that can choose the cheapest. Amgen's 10-K is plain about the result: once multiple biosimilar versions of one of our originator products have launched, competition intensifies rapidly, resulting in accelerated net price declines for both the reference and the biosimilar products1.

KANJINTI sales ($M)5672020572202131620221592023Amgen FY2021, FY2022 and FY2023 results releases
A Herceptin copy that shrank by 72% in two years.

AMJEVITA shows it. Sales fell from $761 million in 2024 to $597 million in 20252, about 22%3. In the second quarter of 2026 MVASI's sales fell 20%, driven by 16% lower net selling price and lower volume4. MVASI, Amgen's copy of the cancer drug Avastin, fell from $1,166 million in 2021 to $771 million in 202556, and KANJINTI, its copy of Herceptin, from $572 million in 2021 to $159 million in 202378.

There is no brand loyalty to defend a copy. What protects a biosimilar is being first, being reliable in supply, and being cheap, and only the first two are advantages a rival cannot match by cutting price.

Amgen's biosimilar band as a whole grew to $3,024 million in 20259, but that growth came mostly from new launches. The older copies are shrinking.

The warning for the whole business would be the band shrinking in a year without a major new launch. That happened between 2021 and 2022, when it fell about 16%10, and if it happens again in 2027 as PAVBLU meets competition, the biosimilar line will have shown it can only grow by launching faster than its products decay.
