UPLIZNA and the Ultra-Rare PortfolioNarrow moat
Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
UPLIZNA grew 90% in the second quarter of 2026 while Horizon's ultra-rare drugs shrank, which shows where Amgen's scale helps and where it does not.
The two smaller Horizon businesses are moving in opposite directions. UPLIZNA, bought for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, a rare autoimmune disease1, sold $65 million in the months after the acquisition in 2023, $379 million in 2024 and $655 million in 202523. In the second quarter of 2026 it sold $335 million, up 90%4, and in the first half $597 million5, almost as much as in all of 2025.
The growth is mostly more patients, not price: the release says the second-quarter increase was primarily driven by volume growth6, and $317 million of the $335 million was American7. Its American patent runs to June 20348.
The ultra-rare products did the opposite. They sold $758 million in 2024 and $719 million in 20259, down about 5%10, and $149 million in the second quarter of 202611. These are drugs for diseases with a few thousand patients worldwide, where sales depend on finding each patient.
Together UPLIZNA and the ultra-rare products sold $1,374 million in 202512. They are the part of Horizon that shows most clearly whether Amgen's scale helps a rare-disease drug: UPLIZNA's growth says it does; the ultra-rare decline says it does not help everything.
The ultra-rare group is five older drugs: PROCYSBI, RAVICTI, ACTIMMUNE, BUPHENYL and QUINSAIR13. It fell 19% in the second quarter of 2026, to $149 million from $183 million14, a faster decline than in 2025.
The figure to track is UPLIZNA's annual sales. Passing $1.2 billion in 2026 would roughly double 2025, a pace consistent with its first half; a slowdown to single-digit growth would say the new indications have been absorbed and the drug is maturing early.
UPLIZNA +90% in Q2 2026; ultra-rare products flat to down.
Whether new indications keep it growing; single-digit growth would mean it matured early.
