Deductions: 41% to 54% of Gross SalesNarrow moat
Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
Amgen gave back $41,983 million of rebates and discounts in 2025, more than the $35,148 million of product sales it kept.
The clearest measure of Amgen's pricing power is the part of its invoices it never keeps. In 2019 rebates, chargebacks and other sales deductions took 41% of gross product sales1; in 2025 they took 54%2. The dollars behind that line were $15,207 million in 2019 and $41,983 million in 202534.
Put another way, Amgen booked $35,148 million of product sales in 20255 after giving away $41,983 million, so the deductions were about 1.19 times what it kept6. Implied gross product sales were about $77.1 billion7. For every dollar that reached the income statement, a larger dollar went back to insurers, benefit managers, governments and the wholesalers who pass chargebacks through.
The growth in deductions outran the growth in sales by a wide margin. Between 2019 and 2025 deductions rose about 2.76 times while net product sales rose about 1.58 times8. Rebates alone went from $6,825 million to $21,697 million, and chargebacks from $7,090 million to $16,988 million910.
The 10-K names the causes where it can. For ENBREL, whose net price fell 36% in 2025, it points to increased 340B Program mix, the Medicare Part D redesign and higher commercial discounts11. For biosimilars, a growing part of Amgen's sales, it warns that once several copies launch, competition intensifies rapidly and net prices fall for originals and copies alike12.
The moat here is real but shrinking. A drug maker whose deductions rise faster than its sales is keeping less of each prescription it writes. The ratio to watch is deductions as a share of gross sales, 54% in 202513. If it reaches 60% within a few years while volume growth slows, Amgen's growth will have been bought with price.
Deductions rose from 41% to 54% of gross sales between 2019 and 2025.
The part of list price Amgen gives back; a rise toward 60% would mean growth is being paid for in price.
